Body Watching and Eavesdropping: Gender and
Communication Styles |
Dr. Janet Mills, Retired, BSU |
| |
Dr. Janet Mills is a body watcher — but lest you think this an
unseemly pastime for a professor, be assured, she does it for purely
professional purposes! And she watches women as well as men. Using the audience
as a database and as volunteers, she gently and humorously describes and
demonstrates how men and women speak different body language. She illustrates
how gendered behaviors convey unspoken messages of power, dominance, and high
status — in the service of hierarchical social arrangements — or, messages of
affiliation, connection, and egalitarian status — in the service of rapport-filled
social arrangements. You’ll gain a set of gender lenses that will enable you to
see gendered nonverbal behaviors at work in any professional setting. And,
you’ll expand your own repertoire of nonverbal behaviors to enhance
effectiveness with clients, staff, and professional peers. But that’s not all!
Dr. Mills is also an eavesdropper! She listens carefully to women
and men to discern how they use language differently — and for different ends. For
example, she identifies how men strive to hold the floor and exert
conversational control — and why — while women focus on turn taking and sharing
conversational space — and why. You’ll learn how manly talk and womanly talk
differ in purpose, content and style.
Finally, Dr. Mills listens for the subtle subscripts or codes that underlie
women’s and men’s conversational styles. You’ll learn what these subtexts are
and how they function for both women and men.
Throughout the session, Dr. Mills suggests strategies for understanding others
and flexing your style for enhanced interpersonal effectiveness. |
